About MuseumWeek
MuseumWeek is the worldwide festival for cultural institutions and their audiences, created in France in 2014 by twelve major Parisian museums, including the Louvre Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Orsay, the Palace of Versailles, the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, and the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie.
Initially conceived as a fully dematerialized online event, MuseumWeek quickly became a global movement. Each year, it unites museums, galleries, libraries, archives, and heritage sites across more than 100 countries around the motto “7 days, 7 themes, 7 hashtags.”
Since 2016, the initiative has been organized with the support of UNESCO, underscoring its commitment to culture, inclusion, and digital innovation. Over time, more and more offline and hybrid events have complemented the online celebration — workshops, exhibitions, and discussions that bring MuseumWeek to life beyond social media.
Today, MuseumWeek also relies on a vibrant network of volunteers and ambassadors in each country, who foster dialogue and collaboration between cultural professionals and communities, helping culture thrive both online and on the ground.
A wave of cultural content on social media
Every year, MuseumWeek sparks a global wave of cultural content shared across social media — millions of posts, images, and videos published by museums and their audiences in over 100 countries.
This collective digital momentum transforms the Internet into a living exhibition space, where diverse cultures, perspectives, and stories meet and resonate worldwide.
Offline activities
MuseumWeek also inspires numerous offline and hybrid events around the world — from artistic performances and concerts to panel discussions, pop-up exhibitions, and creative workshops.
These initiatives, organized by participating institutions and local ambassadors, bring art, dialogue, and communities together in shared cultural experiences that extend far beyond social media.
