This webinar traces the development of UNESCO's Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Objects, from its inception to its official launch at the MONDIACULT 2025 Conference in Barcelona. Designed to raise public awareness of the impact of illicit trafficking in cultural property and to strengthen international cooperation for the return and restitution of stolen heritage, the platform represents a significant step forward in how the international community documents, shares, and acts on cases of cultural property crime.
The session presents a first concrete success story: cultural objects submitted by Romania to the Virtual Museum and subsequently recovered by Dutch authorities — a proof of concept for what cross-border visibility and cooperation can achieve. It also marks the launch of the new Spanish version of the platform, further expanding its international reach.
